NZ Diploma in Aviation (Rotary)Wanaka Helicopters and Learn to Fly NZ enter into their second year as the only NZQA-Approved flight schools to integrate rotary and fixed wing candidates into one comprehensive diploma training programme. Both institutions are locally owned and operated by the Spencer-Bower family with deep roots in New Zealand aviation. Decades of air transport, aerobatics, and commercial operation experience have driven their commitment to innovate in the tertiary training environment.
Simon Spencer-Bower, says, “We aim to produce a better all-around pilot, a goal particularly significant in the challenging terrain of the mountains.” Recognising the unique challenges and opportunities that New Zealand’s diverse landscapes offer, this programme is designed to equip pilots with a deeper understanding of their primary aircraft, but a broader appreciation for practical and safe general aviation.
At the heart of this innovative approach is the integration of rotary and fixed wing curricula. Students attend the same ground courses, offering a holistic view of aviation and the ability to operate with improved situational awareness. By comparing and contrasting rotary and fixed wing systems and practicews, students gain invaluable insights into the mechanics and capabilities of both aircraft platforms, learning how each shines in different operations. Graduates can then leverage their flight-support capabilities into employment opportunities with mixed-fleet operators.
Academic Coordinator Brian Paavo states “Each rotary student will log two hours of flight time in an aeroplane, and vice versa. This hands-on experience provides a great learning opportunity, helping students understand visual limitations, typical performance characteristics, and how basic maneuvers differ.” This immersive training approach is expected to significantly enhance safety in airspaces where light helicopters and light aeroplanes converge, such as mountain passes and unattended aerodromes.
The training programme combines theory and practical experience, empowering young aviators with the skills needed to excel in diverse and demanding ground work and flying environments across the globe.
