This winter, Wanaka Helicopters is thrilled to launch a brand-new private charter experience that redefines alpine exploration, our Heli Snowshoe Adventure, created in collaboration with the snow-loving pros at Best Foot Forward NZ.
Running from 1st July to 15th October (weather and snow permitting), this guided alpine journey is designed especially for those who crave the beauty of the mountains but aren’t necessarily skiers or snowboarders. Whether you’re looking for a lower-risk adventure, a unique winter activity, or simply want to explore the majestic landscapes of Wānaka in a whole new way, this is the experience for you.
Your day begins with a scenic helicopter flight over Lake Wānaka, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Central Otago high country. You’ll land on the Pisa Range at around 1200 metres in elevation. This landscape is pristine and snow-covered, feeling worlds away from the everyday.
From there, your guide, expert Bob McLachlan, will lead you on a snowshoe trek through the alpine wilderness. The route is approximately 4km, but the pace and distance are easily tailored to your group’s needs. Along the way, Bob shares his deep knowledge of the region’s history and unique geology, offering more than just stunning views — this is a story-rich journey through Wānaka’s hidden winter treasures.
Once your snowshoe adventure is complete, you’ll be welcomed into a private hut, where a delicious locally-sourced platter and warming mulled wine await. With a crackling fire, cozy vibes, and sweeping mountain vistas, it’s the perfect way to wind down and reflect on your alpine escape.
