Left to right: Chris, Simon and Pete Spencer-Bower flying in the Hiller 12E Helicopter, ZK-HBL
It’s no real surprise that here at Wanaka Helicopters we adopt the saying ‘Like father, like sons’ on a daily basis!
In keeping with family tradition, Simon Spencer-Bower has recently completed both Pete Spencer-Bower and Chris Spencer-Bower’s type ratings in the unique Hiller 12E Helicopter ZK-HBL.
This remarkable helicopter holds a special place in Wanaka aviation history, being owned by the late Sir Tim Wallis at Alpine Helicopters, a close friend of the Simon’s. Recently piloted by Simon himself in Warbirds over Wanaka 2024, it’s great to see this spectacular machine up in the skies.
Having been rebuilt and refurbed twice throughout its life in both 1978 and 2015, the Hiller 12E now lives at Minaret Station where it is used for mustering and general farm work.
A special thanks to Alpine Helicopters for the privilege of being able to fly this piece of history. Our family-owned business at Wanaka Helicopters is thrilled to have the opportunity to hone our skills in this remarkable machine and looks forward to passing these on once again in the future.
