What You Should Plan/Know Now (From Our Cockpit)
At Wanaka Helicopters and Backcountry Helicopters, we’ve seen how the timing of drawings, permit releases, and reallocation windows can make or break your chances – and your logistics. Here are some tips (and how we can help):
- Be ready from day one. Applying early in both ballots gives you more options before popular blocks fill up.
- Use all your block and period preferences. Don’t leave spots blank – more entries = higher odds.
- Don’t bank on popular blocks. Sometimes less sought blocks deliver better results simply because fewer people choose them (less competition).
- Stay flexible. If you have your heart set on a block but miss out, monitor reallocation windows.
- Plan your transport early. Whether you fly in via helicopter or pick a more conventional route, get your bookings locked in early.
- Understand helicopter landing constraints. In both Wānaka and Haast, there are strict rules around where aircraft can land in roar blocks. We can help you plan routes and landing sites that comply with DOC rules.
