Wanaka Helicopters Simon Spencer-Bower - Pilot Profile
What is your role at Wanaka Helicopters and Backcountry Helicopters?

I was CEO and Chief Pilot until 2023, where I handed over the reigns to my son, Pete. I continue to fly for both companies. I founded Canterbury Helicopters in 1980 and then Wanaka Helicopters in 1995.

Where did you learn to fly?

I learnt to fly aeroplanes (fixed wing) at Canterbury Aero Club in 1967, in a Piper Cub.  I then learnt to fly helicopters to solo stage in 1980 with an American instructor, then taught myself the rest.

How old were you when you learnt to fly?

19

What was your first job after you became a commercial pilot?

I started my own business (Canterbury Helicopters) near Rangiora which started with teaching flight training and then developed into an all encompassing commercial operation.

What is one piece of advice you would pass on to those who are considering learning to fly?

Learn to fly with an experienced flight school with experienced instructors, as you will learn far more from an instructor that has ‘weathered a few storms’.  Once graduated, your professionalism, personality and enthusiasm will be just as, if not more important than, your flying skills, in securing an aviation job.

What is your favourite part about your job?

Seeing the joy people get from either achieving their aviation goal or experiencing the joy of a helicopter ride or scenic flight.

Where is your favourite location you fly to in your work and why?

The South Island of New Zealand, especially the lower half of the South Island as this has the most beautiful, pristine and diverse scenery anywhere in NZ, if not the world.

What is one of your biggest highlights in your aviation career?

Seeing my sons, Chris and Pete become top class pilots and instructors.  Also being recognised with various awards for my aviation achievements over the years. (QSM, Flight Instructor of the year etc)

What is your favourite helicopter?

Your favourite helicopter is usually the one you are most familiar with, and the most reliable. The Robinson R44 is a great all rounded, safe, reliable helicopter, and cheap to operate.  The Squirrel (AS350) helicopter is very suitable and spacious for all types of operations in all weathers, but being turbine powered, is more expensive to operate.
